On average, rail is four times more fuel efficient than trucking, with one rail car removing four trucks from local roads. In addition, moving freight by rail instead of by truck reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 75%.

Freight service on the California Western Railroad (CWR) is provided by Mendocino Railway.

Transloading services are available in Fort Bragg and Willits as well as at intermittent stations along the route.
